Jersey City Parking Rules:
One of the important things to note about parking alongside the curb in Jersey City is the required distance between the curb and the car. You need to be within six inches of the curb, which is much closer than it is in most other states.
Colored curbs guide
You must also pay attention to the color of the curbs:
Red curbs.
Red curbs mean no parking, standing or stopping for any reason, at any time.
Yellow curbs.
Yellow curbs mean no parking, but sometimes stopping or standing for specific purposes is permitted. They are usually accompanied by a road sign indicating the circumstances under which parking or stopping is permitted.
Blue curbs.
Blue curbs indicate that the area is reserved for disabled permit holders.
Green curbs.
Green curbs mean that parking is reserved for car-sharing vehicles.
White curbs.
White curbs mean parking is restricted. Motorists may have to hold a special permit or use a parking meter to park next to a white curb.
Parking signs explained
You can find below a list of Jersey City most common parking signs:
No Parking sign: You may not park during the posted hours, usually to enable street sweeping.. Otherwise, you risk getting a parking ticket.
Residential Time Limit: Its purpose is to secure street parking for residents and business owners of a neighborhood.
If you hold a permit, you may park and the time limit doesn’t apply.
If you don’t hold a permit, you may park for the time limit posted. You should not park in the same block right after the end of the time limit. Otherwise you risk getting your vehicle towed-away.
Snow Emergency – No Parking: Whenever snow has fallen and the accumulation is such that it covers the street or highway, no vehicle shall be parked on either side of any of certain streets. View full list of streets concerned.
Where to not park
Unless directed to do so by a police officer or to avoid an accident, you should never stop or park at any of the following places, according to the New Jersey Code:
- In a bus stop zone
- In front of a public or private driveway
- Within an intersection
- On a crosswalk, a sidewalk, an interstate highway, or any bridge or elevated roadway or in any tunnel
- In a space on public or private property marked for vehicle parking for the handicapped, unless you have the legal authorization and the plates or placards to prove it.
- Within 10 feet of a fire hydrant
- Within 25 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection, or side line of a street or intersection highway, except at alleys
- Within 50 feet of a railroad crossing
- Within 50 feet of a stop sign
- Within 20 feet of the driveway entrance to any fire station and within 75 feet on the street opposite a fire station entrance
- Next to another vehicle parked at the curb (double parking)
- Between a safety zone for pedestrians and the adjacent curb or within 20 feet of the end of the safety zone
- Near properly marked street construction
- In an area where parking is prohibited by municipal ordinance
Jersey City Residential Parking Permits
You can get parking permits for residential zones and for municipal lots from the Division of Parking Enforcement.
A $15 annual permit for residents will allow them to park in the zone 24 hours a day. A non-residential parking permit will cost $300 a year. People who work but don’t live in the area will have to buy a $50 permit every six months.
