Rules for free parking in San Francisco
Rule #1
No matter where you park in San Francisco, the maximum allowed duration is 72 hours. This rule is only enforced if a neighbor calls SFMTA to complain about a parked vehicle. So as long as your car is not noticed you should be good.
Rule #2
In some residential areas, a parking permit is required to park for more than a few hours during certain days and times. Watch out for signs that look like the one below.
In this example: If you don’t have a U permit you can only park for 2 hours Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm. Outside of those hours you can park for longer (but remember rule #1 – never for more than 72 hours)
Rule #3
Watch out for Street Cleaning! Street Cleaning can happen at any time of the day in residential areas and usually at night in commercial areas. You can learn more about street cleaning in this guide.
